In the heart of #Casablanca, #Morocco there is a place where many ideas and dreams come true! @bidaya_incubateur Bidaya is a place where young people can get some help with their #sustainable projects and #greenstartups. We met some young people at Bidaya and learned about the projects. One of the projects, Bidaya is supporting is implemented by a young woman, her name is Aya Laraki @ayalaraki, she has invented a method to transform fish waste into leather and make shoes? and bags? out of it. It looks like the skin of a crocodile ? or snake ?. But you don't have to kill exotic animals for it. That is only one of the projects we learned about, but they also have a lot more in the sphere of sustainable tourism, #recycling, #wastemanagement , #socialsolutions, and #socialinnovation!

ᴮᴵᴼᴳᴬˢ ᴾᴬᴿᵀ 3 We visited Dr. Lamine Ndyae, who has a biogas installation at his home in Dakar (he uses HomeBiogas). He explained to us how it works and it turned out to be pretty simple. He takes all foodwaste, manure, cooking oil and so one (all the organic waste) and puts it inside the digester, which works the same way as a cows belly — produces gas and a fertilizer. Take a look at the garden on the roof. He grows his own plants naturally, and is all effortless. When asked, whether he sticks to biogas because it is cheaper, he simply replies: “No, it is not cheaper. But I do it because I care about the environment. I want to set an example to others. Because it is a solution to the problem of waste management”. And he does. It is not a huge step, but it plays a part in the global awareness of the opportunities that lie within this sustainable way of living. We sincerely hope that more people in the world follow the example that he sets.

???????? ??? ????? ??????? ?? ??????? ?????? ??? ????????. ???? (with Russian translation in comment) A gorgeous building from 2011 that can welcome 1800 visitors (after it re-opens, of course). The director of the theatre Keyssi Bousso says that it is one of the most important landmarks on the whole continent when it comes to the cultural life of Africa. The life behind the scene is going on during the lock down. We got permission to visit this place because of our new friend, Madam Slou Akimguereeva. Madam Slou is a Russian minded lady from Kazakhstan, who has helped us a lot during our stay in Dakar. She has dedicated her life to the development of the Russian ballet academy in South Africa and Senegal. She has brought up more than a thousand ballerina during her work. In the first picture, you can see a Senegalese ballerina wearing a traditional Russian dress. Madam Slou is preparing her for an international festival, which will be held online, because of the COVID. Madam Slou is working everyday hard on helping Keyssi Bousso with making Senegalese culture go to an international level, to show that Africa has something very beautiful and important in the culture. We will soon hang more out with this lady, so don’t miss out on stories, to learn more about this topic. Now back to the theatre. The theatre is massive and the acoustics in the performance hall is incredible. We hope to be able to visit it when it opens up. Yet, even a brief visit to the Grand Theatre was worth it!

ᴿᴱᶜᵞᶜᴸᴵᴺᴳ ᴾᴸᴬˢᵀᴵᶜ ᴵᴺ ᴰᴬᴷᴬᴿ♻️ Plastic recycling is a a positive trend in our world nowadays. Instead of waiting for someone else to spark the interest of the senegalese youth in recycling, they do it themselves! Plastic waste is a big issue for both the environment and people. It pollutes the soil, endangers the health of farm animals and wildlife, including marine animals that confuse plastic bags with food and can die of suffocation. In urban areas plastic waste cloggs sewers and can turn into breeding sites for mosquitoes that transmit yellow fever, malaria and other deadly infections. Disposal of plastic, burning it like any other waste is not a solution — it produces various toxic substances and gases, that can cause human diseases — from respiratory diseases to cancer. In 2020 Senegal will significantly restrict import and usage of plastic, standardise the manufacturing processes, quality management, to ensure the production of reusable and more resistant products. This will lead to an increase in recycling of plastic, better processing of plastic waste and to a higher level of environmental protection. Yet, plastic itself is not an enemy — not recycled plastic is. That is why The Meridian Expedition visited a workshop that is collecting and grinding different types of plastic (namely PET, LDPE and HDPE), before sending them further to get recycled. These guys are doing a very inspiring thing. Such initiatives are one of the key elements in Senegalese efforts in countering the existing problems with plastic waste. Check out this episode of The Meridian Expedition, discovering Senegal from the smart side and sharing it with you! You are always welcome to contact the guys if you want to help them in their work: ngomrecyclage@gmail.com ——————————— Le recyclage du plastique est une tendance positive dans notre monde de nos jours.

??????? ?? ??? ?????? ???????? ???? ????????? Visiting villages and learning more about Senegal from the inside. The country is an amazing place — people are friendly and always eager to give a helping hand not only to each other but also to foreigners. Those people you see on the pictures are just ordinary people who live their lives in this village in the territory of the National park. During the tourist season, they work in the park and try to earn some money on tourism. They have a small hotel and some boats to rent for those, who want to discover the lakes in the park. During the COVID time, the park is closed, but life in the villages is still going on. They work, go to schools, pray and prepare the park for the upcoming season. The village has almost everything that these people need. Mechanic, butcher, rice and corn factory. And as you can see they don’t even need much to be happy. Everyone is smiling and we felt that we are welcomed in this village. Of course, there are many things that are not as in Europe or Russia and it can be very difficult for us to understand the other part of our world. But we are here not to judge or bring them some rules from Europe. We are here to discover and understand the other part of our world. Even in these tough times (the Covid is still a thing here) the country is trying its best to maintain the normal way of living, yet the social distancing is practised in many places. Share this post with someone who wants to learn more about Africa. West Africa is not bad and dangerous, as you may hear on TV or from snobbish friends who haven't been there. We are discovering Africa from scratch — we share with you what we learn and we invite you on this amazing journey to discover the world. So subscribe and comment to help us learn more and better!

On our way to the place where we planted mangrove trees, we were driving across a small village called Nianing. We decided to stop there for a while to see the unique Church. The people in the village were so friendly, we got permission to go inside the church and upstairs to the tower even though it was closed for the visitors. The church warden told us a little bit about the people in the village. Most of them are Catholics and someone is Muslim. Not every Sunday but almost every day the church is full of religious prayers. During weddings and other Christian holidays, people celebrate it in the Church as one family. So it's not just a building with a Bioclimatic design, but a place where people can be united in good or bad periods of their lives. By the way, you can't find a similar building in the world, there is only one of them. This shell-shaped biomimetic building is inspired by termite mounds to preserve the faithful from the heat. The church is built by an International team: IN SITU Architecture, ETECS structural engineer, GA2D builder supervisor, Eiffage Sénégal general contractor, and the French architecture, Nicolas Vernoux-Thelot in 2018, as a gift for this village. We were also told that the same architect has also built a little stadion and some small buildings for children, where they can study and prepare for school. Everything in this village is very colorful and clean. We liked it a lot! The village has schools and a little medical center. People who are living there are mostly fishers. Usually, most of the children get an education in the village, but some of the families don't have enough money to support them with books and other necessary things, so the children get engaged in different activities, like planting mangrove trees. Basically, most of them do it for free, but someone who is in need gets support from local organizations to buy things they need for school. The most important thing is, that people are happy with what they have there. Everyone is smiling and we were invited to a delicious dinner where we tasted local, handmade, and super fresh juice, fish, and other delicious things.
